I'd given it a lot of thought. I still wasn't completely convinced about working for Microsoft, but I was a bit more open to the idea. The idea of building a search engine to compete with Google certainly had it's appeal - especially in the early stages. So a week or so after my meeting with Jim, a recruiter from Microsoft named Jenna contacted me and asked me to come to Redmond for a full day of interviews. So I figured, at worst, I get a free trip to Seattle. Angie was pregnant with Callum at the time, with only a couple of weeks to go, so I asked Jenna to postpone the trip until after Callum was born.

June 28th came, Callum was born, and I contacted Jenna to arrange the interview. A week later, while Callum was still wet behind the ears, I was on a plane to Seattle. I arrived at SeaTac airport, picked up a hire car, and started looking around. I had a day or so before the interview, so I took the opportunity to explore. Seattle is a beautiful city, and the Eastside is particularly spectacular, with views of snow-capped peaks and tree-covered hills. For the Aussies, the Eastside is the suburban area East of Lake Washington. Redmond, Bellevue, and Kirkland are the main Eastside cities, nestled between Lake Washington and Lake Sammamish (Aussies: Americans refer to these places as cities - we would think of them more as suburbs).

The interview day was gruelling and thorough. The interviews started at 9:00 am, and continued until around 7:00 pm, with about 10 minutes break after lunch. As challenging as it was, it was also rewarding. The interviewers were all technical staff who were working on MSN Search, and they were all impressive in their knowledge and technical expertise. And the view from the second floor of the office - wow. By the end of the day, I was exhausted, but abuzz with ideas and excited at the prospect of being part of that team. I guess it was then that I was sold.

A couple of weeks later, Jenna called to offer me the job, and within a week, I had accepted. We were planning to move to Redmond early in November.
